Alias Mat 1:12; Ezr 1:8. In 1Chr 3:19 he is named as son of Pedaiah. In Ezr 3:2 and Neh 12:1 and Hag 1:1 and Mat 1:12 he is named as the son of Salathiel. Probably Salathiel died and Pedaiah took Salathiel's wife and begat Zerubbabel to provide descendant to his brother (Salathiel). See Ezr 2:2; 3:2; 5:14; Neh 7:7. He was "the prince of Judah" in the times of Cyrus, the Persian king and he lead the first inhabitants back to Jerusalem after the exile. See Neh 12:47; Hag 1:1; Zech 4:6.
